Asian-themed Tao, opening Tuesday, next on Mohegan Sun’s restaurant menu

March 21 – MOHEGAN – While COVID-19 caused restaurants in Mohegan Sun and elsewhere to be closed and then gradually reopened over the past year, it has not significantly altered the casino’s plans for Tao , the Asian-themed restaurant slated to open on Tuesday just off the Sky Tower hotel lobby.

Throughout the pandemic, work continued on the new bistro / lounge which was tucked away in a space formerly occupied by Bobby Flay’s Bar American.

“Construction slowed down and materials were scarce – at one point glass was hard to find – but we’ve never stopped, and I think we’re opening at the perfect time,” said Jeff Hamilton, president and director General of Mohegan Sun. “With the lifting of state restrictions on restaurants, we believe this will help accelerate our recovery.”

This is the sixth incarnation of Tao, with the others being in Downtown and Midtown Manhattan, Chicago and Los Angeles, and the Venetian Resort Casino in Las Vegas.

“We’re trying to create reasons to come to the property,” Hamilton said of adding Tao to Mohegan Sun’s culinary mix. “There is more stuff here than games. There is signature food and drink. It is a game changer.”

Brendan McManus, director of operations for Tao Group Hospitality, which operates restaurants and nightlife venues under a number of brands, said the pandemic presented some challenges, including the need to prepare restaurant staff through training sessions. virtual training. In recent days, Tao has served members of the Mohegan tribe and invited guests to dry races.

Planning to operate at 50% capacity in its first few weeks, Tao has hired 75 employees and hopes to add around 50 more when fully opened.

“We space things out at the start, and then we’ll slowly increase,” McManus said.

When Tao started booking reservations three weeks before its scheduled opening, it took 1,300 in the first 48 hours, he said.

The 10,000-square-foot restaurant, which seats 300, features 3,800 square feet of dining and main circulation space, a 1,600-square-foot lounge and two 700-square-foot semi-private dining rooms. A main feature of the decor is a 16-foot-tall statue of Guan Yin, the Buddhist goddess worshiped by the Chinese, which overlooks a pond of koi carp.

Chef Ralph Scamardella, Partner of Tao Group Hospitality, will oversee a menu featuring iconic Tao dishes such as Chilean Sea Bass Satay, Lobster Wontons, Peking Duck, ‘Sand’ Crisp Snapper and Tuna Sashimi Pringle .
