Five CU Restaurant Dishes That Make Awesome Leftovers: Food & Drink: Politely Smile

Adding extra dishes to my take out orders is one way I like to plan meals. If I didn’t feel like cooking on Friday night, I certainly wouldn’t want to cook the next night. It’s good to have enough food for leftovers, if it’s good. I don’t want any leftover casserole or salad. No, I want good leftovers.

After ordering a plentiful supply of take out over the past year or so, I’ve become somewhat of a pro at what extra dishes or sides make great leftovers. Spoiler: Most fries are junk when reheated, but who has extra fries at the end of a meal? Here are five dishes that are so good that leftovers I always order extra whenever I get food at these places.

pulled pork | Black Dog Smoke & Ale

You can buy pulled pork (and other meats) by the pound at Black Dog. A pound of pulled pork costs $ 22.95, making it a great leftover meal. Just toss the pork in a pot and toss it in a 350 degree oven until it’s hot enough to enjoy. I love how tender and smoky Black Dog’s pork is – and that it’s about as good as leftovers because it’s fresh. I just like to eat pork with a little sauce, no side or anything fancy. I have a soft spot for hot Georgia peach for my pulled pork, but I wouldn’t say no to any of Black Dog’s sauces. This pulled pork will work equally well in a wrap, a sandwich, on a pizza, or as an accompaniment to a salad or an omelet.

Llapingachos | El Paraiso

Llapingachos ($ 2), a little side of the Latin American Broadway Food Hall restaurant, is one of my favorites to pick up – even if I’m having lunch at another BFH restaurant. Llapingachos is an Ecuadorian dish made from potatoes stuffed with cheese and then fried on a hot plate. El Paraiso’s Cheese Potato Pancake has a queso core with a smooth mashed potato texture. It’s fantastic the day I buy my llapingachos, but I’ve learned that it heats up so well that I always have at least two of them. It makes a great breakfast or snack the next day without any prep. Simply place it on foil in the toaster oven for about five minutes, and you have a cheesy potato treat that tastes freshly made.

Pizza | that of Manolo

This pizza is delicious hot out of the oven at Manolo for take out, delivered to my house, or made from frozen pizza, but leftover pizza? It is an essential element for any remaining list. I love the make-your-own pizza with pepperoni, garlic Alfredo sauce, and seasoned breadcrumbs ($ 15.99). I love these seasoned bread crumbs so much because the salty and crunchy crumbs level this pizza. Sure, you can eat it cold if you’re cool like that, but I’m not that cool; I prefer hot pizza, so I toss it in a pan for a few minutes over medium heat with a drizzle of water and the lid on top. When I hear the slices pop a bit in the pan, I know it’s done. The thin crispy crust the second time around, and the pepperoni and breadcrumb toppings along with Manolo’s minimal sauce on the pizza make reheating easy.

Yellow Curry | Sticky rice

This yellow curry ($ 11) from Sticky Rice looks amazing when you order it, but it’s also great when reheated. The protein options for this yellow curry are chicken, beef, pork, tofu, shrimp, and duck. I chose the chicken for mine. The yellow curry had a delicious coconut broth with a sweet yellow curry taste filled with thinly sliced ​​chicken, diced potatoes and sweet onion ribbons and a side of steamed white rice. I like to make it sweet (3/10) because it still packs a punch, but it’s not too spicy. The curry is nice and filling, and I have to have it every time I order sticky rice to go. The portion is large enough, so eat some for dinner and have some leftovers the next day. You can of course microwave it, but I don’t like microwave chicken, so I put a bowl of rice in the microwave and heat the curry in a saucepan on the stovetop until that it simmers. Then I pour it over the white rice and enjoy it.

Sticky Rice is open for limited indoor meals in addition to take out, so you can enjoy Thai food however you want. Just make sure you order enough of that yellow curry to have some for leftovers. Place your order here.

Yaki Udon | Sushi Kame

The chicken yaki udon is my favorite. I can’t chop veg that thin, and I certainly can’t make noodles at home with that flavor developed like a restaurant chef can. Sushi Kame’s yaki udon can be made with chicken, beef, tofu, or just vegetables. I like the chicken version because these little pieces of poultry are so tasty. The vegetables were solid too. Sushi Kame’s chicken yaki udon has a portion large enough to enjoy with dinner and still have leftovers. When I make leftovers, I heat them in a pan with a little water. Stir occasionally so that the soft noodles don’t stick to the bottom of the pan.
