WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAW) – Inflation continues to affect people and businesses across the country. Now, many restaurants and food trucks are increasing the price of their menus to offset the increased cost of supplies.
“All around. Everything, everything is more expensive right now,” said Mitch Slaughter, owner of Mitch’s Texas Tacos.
High inflation is costing restaurant owners more money to run their business.
“For restaurants, their food inflation, along with other goods and services they need, is about 17% higher than a year ago,” said Susan Quam, executive vice president of the Wisconsin Restaurant Association. .
Slaughter said he had to raise his menu prices to compensate for the price increases.
“Right off the bat, I just had to raise all my prices, which I try not to do,” Slaughter said.
The price increase is to keep the business profitable.
“These menu prices are not because they are trying to take advantage of consumers. It’s because if they don’t, they’ll lose money,” Quam said.
Slaughter said he pays more for many items he uses in his food truck.
“And a lot of things have doubled. Some of my tortilla prices have doubled,” Slaughter said.
Slaughter said products, like a case of 24 sodas, went up about $2.
“For the chips, for the lettuce, the avocados, everything,” Slaughter said, “It’s just hit everywhere you go. And it’s changing. And the chicken prices and all the issues we’ve had. They’ve all increased.
It’s more than the cost of food.
“It’s the cost of gas that powers their stoves, the cost of electricity that runs their lights and refrigerators. It all increases,” Quam said.
Slaughter said he will have to pay the price whether the cost of food or expenses goes up or down, so he said his main priority is his customers.
“What I do is I focus on the people, not the business aspect. If you make people feel wanted when they arrive, there is no price you can put on that,” Slaughter said.
